The situation

Junk removal in the Bay Area is one of the more brutal local auctions there is. 1-800-Got-Junk, College Hunks Hauling Junk, and Junk King all operate here, all have national marketing budgets, and all show up for the obvious searches. An independent operator going head to head on spend loses every time.

Spartan didn't need to outspend them. They needed to be the first credible name a person sees in the ten seconds between "I need this couch gone" and dialing a number.

Why LSA was the right channel

Local Services Ads sit above the paid search ads and above the map pack. They carry the Google Guaranteed badge, show a review score, and put a call button directly in the listing. For a decision made this fast — someone standing in a garage looking at a pile — that position is worth more than any amount of ad copy further down the page.

The billing model matters too. LSA charges per lead rather than per click, so budget goes toward actual contacts instead of curious clicks. For a business where every lead is a potential same-day job, that's the right trade.

What I did

  1. Verification, done right the first time. License, insurance, and background check submitted in the format Google wants. This is where most local businesses stall for weeks over a resubmission.
  2. Job types narrowed to the work Spartan wanted. Broad job type selection is the most common way LSA budgets leak — you end up paying for calls about services you don't offer.
  3. Service area drawn to the real driving radius. Not a generous circle that looks good on a map and produces jobs an hour away.
  4. Budget paced against job value. Set so that the cost per lead made sense against what a booked haul is actually worth, rather than a round number that felt comfortable.
  5. Ongoing dispute management. Wrong numbers, spam, out-of-area calls — filed and recovered rather than absorbed.
  6. Review flow. LSA ranking leans heavily on review volume and recency, so reviews from completed jobs feed straight back into position.

The honest caveat

This is one local campaign in a defined service area across a single 30-day window, Jun 7 to Jul 6, 2026. It is not a national dataset. What it demonstrates is position, not volume: Spartan won the placement battle against companies spending many times more.

The volume question is a budget question, and it's the one the Performance Max campaign answers.

What I'd do for a similar business

If you're an independent operator in a category dominated by franchises — junk removal, plumbing, HVAC — the playbook is roughly the same:

What changes is the math. A $90 lead is expensive for a small haul and cheap for a full property cleanout. That calculation is the first thing I'd want to do with you.

Troy Benna, Owner of Spartan Junk Removal: "Excellent service! I would definitely recommend."
